Project Details

The new skills hub, Mill Studios, will serve students aged 16 and over, providing high-tech facilities for studies in film and TV production, design and editing, esports, and games design. The centre will also feature collaborative spaces for events, exhibitions, and employer engagement, fostering an environment of creativity and industry interaction.

Key Features

  • Cutting-edge Facilities: High-tech setups for film and TV production, design, editing, esports, and games design.
  • Collaborative Spaces: Designed for events, exhibitions, and active engagement with industry employers.
  • Future-focused Learning: Equipping students with the skills needed for careers in digital and creative industries.

Our Role

We were appointed main contractor on a JCT D&B contract for the scheme, working closely with the college and wider design team. Due to budget constraints the project required constant design, value engineering and agile working to ensure spend was managed whilst still ensuring the scheme was delivered in time to welcome students in September. This partnership ensured the project was tailored to meet the specific needs of the college and its students, providing a transparent and flexible process from inception to completion.

Complete Fit-Out

We delivered a comprehensive fit-out for the new studio in 8 weeks, including:

  • Remediation works to the historic structure and additional passive fire protection. Sandblasting existing brickwork, beams and columns working closely with Heritage England due to the nature of the 18th Century mill.
  • Design & Install of a full M&E system; including Fire Alarm, ventilation, heating/cooling, and plumbing.
  • Formation and full fit out to create new classrooms, tv/production studio complete with Green Screen, Esports gaming hub, kitchen, and staff/student welfare facilities.

Project Outcome

The Mill Studio is welcoming students from the September 2024 intake, nurturing the next generation of 16–18-year-old in film and TV production, gaming design, production and ESports to young people entering roles in creative industries. This new facility is set to transform learning in the digital creative sector and offer students an engaging environment with cutting-edge technology.

Conclusion

We are thrilled to have been a part of this transformative project, helping Calderdale College to expand its educational offerings and support the future of digital and creative skills. The new Mill Studios is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative and impactful educational spaces.
